And to break down the basics of this interesting procedure, here are 10 things you need to know before you decide to try this procedure for yourself:
1. It has many names.
Some people call it 3D Brow Tattooing and some use the term eyebrow embroidery, but the most common and literal term is microblading. Take your pick!
2. It’s not the same with traditional tattooed-on brows.
There’s a reason why it’s usually referred to as microblading or eyebrow embroidery instead of “brow tattoos,” and that is due to the bad reputation of tattooed-on brows. Traditional eyebrow tattoos are too dark, thin, or unnatural-looking, while microbladed brows aim to mimic real brow hairs so they tend to look more natural.
3. It needs to be done by a professional.
Microbladed brows are still considered face tattoos, so you have to carefully review portfolios of brow artists and make sure that they’re legit before availing of the service. Only visit licensed brow salons to be sure. A professional should also consult with you about your preferred shape and color before beginning the tattooing process, so don’t be afraid to be picky.
4. It can get a little pricey.
Professional brow artists need to undergo a lot of training in order to start microblading on actual clients, and the process itself is very delicate and requires a great eye for detail and precision. The equipment is no joke either, since everything needs to be clean and safe. It’s truly an investment procedure.
5. Instead of needles, microblading uses blade and ink.
To achieve the look of real eyebrow hairs, brow artists use small blades to make small cuts on the eyebrows, and then they fill in the cuts with ink, hence the term “microblading”. It’s a delicate process, and according to Ara, her experience with Phibrows required her to fill out a form to make sure that she’s qualified for the procedure.
6. It won’t hurt as much as a regular tattoo would.
Most brow artists will use numbing cream or anesthetic to keep the process practically painless. So unless you have any allergies or sensitivities to the artist’s preferred anesthetic, then microblading shouldn’t hurt. Ara even claimed that having her brows threaded was more painful!
7. After the first session, expect to have very dark brows.
According to Agoo, her eyebrows looked very dark for around three to five days after the first session, but they eventually faded and began to look more natural. This gradual fading is normal since microbladed eyebrows are only semi-permanent.
8. You will be asked to come in for touch-ups.
As mentioned, microbladed brows are only semi-permanent, which means that they do fade overtime. Brow artists require clients to get touchups four to six weeks after the first session.
9. Microbladed brows are basically like a wound that you need to take care of.
Take this into account and ask your brow artist about wound care before the session!
10. It’ll make your mornings and beauty routines simpler.
For all the ladies we interviewed, the final consensus was positive. They loved waking up to perfect brows. Ara particularly recommends microblading to fuss-free girls like her who don’t want to spend time doing their eyebrows everyday, and to those who either don’t know how to do their brows or have no brows at all. But if you’re someone who likes to change your brow shape and look often, getting semi-permanent brows might be too restricting.
